We're hosting a bike ride around historic KC and a post-ride BBQ and party!
FreeWheels for Kids, Woodyard Barbecue, Boulevard Brewing Company and the UMKC History Department are teaming up to host bike rides through some of KC's lesser-known history and host a great recovery ride and party afterward!
Bikes, Beer and Barbecue pretty much describes it: a day of charity rides, touring the historical churches of Kansas City, followed by an evening of beer and barbecue. It's a celebration of all that FreeWheels for Kids done to empower kids with bicycles since 2012, and all it hopes to do in the future. We want to bring together friends and supporters for a fun-filled day, and raise a little bit of money for FreeWheels programming in the process.
The day begins with afternoon charity rides at 10, 30, and 50 miles, which we're calling the Cathedral Gran Fondo. The rides disembark from Kaw Point Park at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers, near downtown KCK. Each will give riders a view of the beautiful cathedrals that dot KCK and KCMO, some as old as the cities themselves.
2:00 pm - 50 mile ride begins: This is a Gran Fondo. You will be timed, and there are prizes for the top three finishers. We planned the route to be fast, but be sure to stop for traffic lights.
2:00 pm - 30 mile ride begins: This led ride will make stops at historical sites in KCK and KCMO, where the ride leader, UMKC professor of history Chris Cantwell, will give short talks about the history of Kansas City before the group rides out together.
3:00 pm - 12 mile ride begins: This is the KCK history ride. Local leaders will fill you in on our history and the group will stay together as we ride from 1803 to 2014 in the 'dotte.
5:00 pm - Feasting begins
After the rides, beginning at 5 p.m., we'll dig in to barbecue from KCK mainstay Woodyard BBQ. Bike commuters know it as the best-smelling block on Merriam lane, and they'll be bringing their signature smoked pulled pork and some other stuff to the point this Saturday.
To go along with our BBQ we'll have all the Boulevard beer you can drink. Boulevard is a big supporter of cycling in KC, and we are happy to have their sponsorship!
We'll eat, drink, be merry, and have short presentations about FreeWheels for Kids and our vision of a Kansas City where all kids are empowered to live healthy lives and be leaders in their communities, through bicycling.
About FreeWheels for Kids
FreeWheels for Kids is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit that works to empower Kansas City kids with bicycles. We teach kids basic bike skills, hold earn-a-bike classes to teach basic bicycle repair and maintenence, and organize Bike Clubs where they learn advocacy and leadership skills to become leaders in their neighborhoods. Our intrepid young cyclists have repaired all manner of bicycles, beautified trails, taught bike skills to younger kids, and presented neighborhood infrastructure improvements to County Commissioners. There is nothing these kids can't do if you give them the opportunity. You can read more about FreeWheels for Kids at www.freewheelskc.org.
