Weekly update: new volunteer opportunities and upcoming events

Let's keep the momentum going!

Bike Club volunteers needed!

Our Bike Club kids are doing some great things, and we need help! Bike Clubs go on short bike rides after school twice each week, plan activities to improve their community and repair bikes for younger students.  We are looking for folks to help us empower middle school students to be kick-butt community advocates after school!  If this is you, contact us!

Saturday rides

Saturday mornings are a great time to get together, make plans for a better Kansas city, and ride bikes!

Bike Clubs asked about doing activities on weekends, so Saturday rides are back! We will be hosting rides and community service days at program sites all spring, starting with a ride from Central Middle School on April 5. This is a great opportunity to see the work we do and even pitch in!  For more details, contact us and check the events calendar to see what's coming up!

BLAST rodeos!

Anybody else remember PE? Wearing uniforms, learning how to line dance and play weird, made-up games? Yeah, I wasn't a fan either.  Luckily for today's kids, PE is a BLAST, thanks to BikeWalkKC's Bicycle Lessons and Safety Training program, which FreeWheels for Kids uses in Kansas City, KS.

We're very psyched to say that with the help of New Belgium Community Giving, the Menorah Legacy Foundation and the Cray Family Foundation we are bringing bike safety into PE at USD 500 schools! We'll bring a loaner fleet of bikes, including 12 Specialized Hotrocks thanks to Epic Bike and Sport

Kids in 4th and 5th grade learn bike safety over two weeks of classes, starting with the basics (like riding without training wheels, always a GREAT part of a class) and moving up to a traffic simulation on the playground. Afterwards, we take bike repaired by Earn-a-Bike Master Mechanics and give them to BLAST graduates at an after-school bike rodeo hosted by Bike Clubs.

That's where you come in! Check out our events page and volunteer with us!

MTB Skills training needed!
Rosedale kids have some awesome trails at their disposal, but they are not the strongest, most confident trail riders. If you are interested in teaching basic trail riding skills, contact us ASAP and let's get these kids the skills they need to really enjoy the trails they're building!
Bike Rodeo volunteers

After the classes are over, Bike Club students host a bike rodeo at the school to give kids a chance to hone their skills and to give away the bikes repaired by the Master Mechanics.  We could use some grown-up help on these days, please check out the events for dates and times!

We're hosting another bike race and community bike rodeo at Kaw Point Park on Saturday, May 31 and Sunday, June 1  If you'd like to volunteer, be a sponsor or help plan awesome activities, let us know ASAP!
